AROUND 170 NEW vehicles are to be purchased for Gardaí in what Minister Alan Shatter has described as a “substantial” investment in the Garda fleet. Around €3 million will be spent on the vehicles, which will include mostly patrol cars as well as some unmarked cars and vans. “This is a substantial investment in Garda transport, particularly at a time of severe budgetary constraints,” said Justice Minister Alan Shatter today. The cars are due to be delivered within the next three months. The money will come from the Department of Justice which, Alan Shatter said, has put in place arrangements to set aside the funding for the vehicles. Garda authorities will decide which stations and areas should receive the vehicles depending on policing requirements. Alan Shatter said that he was conscious of the need to support An Garda Síochána to the greatest extent possible despite the current economic situation. www.thejournal.ie/new-garda-cars-636420-Oct2012/www.corrupteire.blogspot.ie/2012/10/gardai-to-get-170-new-vehicles.html
